Timing is Everything: Master Your Medicare Enrollment.

Navigating the different Medicare enrollment windows can be stressful, and missing a Part B or Part D deadline can lead to lifelong financial penalties. Akroamatik Financial takes the guesswork out of the process, helping you track your specific dates—from your Initial Enrollment Period to the Annual Election Period—and secure the exact Medicare coverage you need without the stress.

Medicare Parts A & B – Enrollment

Initial Enrollment

The Initial Enrollment Period is a limited timeframe during which you can sign up for Original Medicare (Part A and/or Part B) when you first become eligible.

Once enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B, you have the option to choose additional coverage, such as Medicare Advantage, Medigap, or Part D, from approved private insurers.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

January 1st – March 31st every year

If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period and don't qualify for a special exception, this is your chance to sign up for Medicare Part A and/or Part B.

(Note: Coverage usually begins the month after you enroll, and you may be subject to late enrollment penalties).

Individuals Aged 65 or Older

Your Initial Enrollment Period is determined by the month you turn 65. It starts three months before your birth month and continues until three months after your birth month.

Your enrollment period lasts 7 months, based on the month you turn 65.

Example: If your birthday is January 12th, 1958, your enrollment period would be October 1st, 2022 - April 30th, 2023.

Eligible Enrollment Months:

How To Enroll

If you already receive Social Security or certain retirement benefits, you may be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare during this time period.

Annual Enrollment Period

(October 15 through December 7)

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period offers an annual chance to review and modify your Medicare coverage.

You can:

  • Enroll in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.

  • Discontinue your Medicare Advantage plan and switch back to Original Medicare (Part A and Part B).

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.

  • Add or adjust your Prescription Drug.

Coverage (Part D) plan if you are enrolled in Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP)

(January 1 through March 31)

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is only for people who already have a Medicare Advantage plan.

You can:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan.

  • Drop your Advantage plan entirely and return to Original Medicare (and pick up a standalone Part D drug plan).

You can only make one change during this period.

* Note: In certain situations, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. This period provides an opportunity to enroll in the Medicare program or make changes to your Medicare options outside of the Initial and annual Open Enrollment Periods.

Attention: Individuals Under Age 65 with an Eligible Disability

Your Initial Enrollment Period is determined by when you started receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) disability benefits. It begins in the 22nd month after you start receiving benefits and lasts until the 28th month after that.

Example: If you began receiving disability benefits in January 2022, your Initial Enrollment Period is from November 1, 2023 until May 31, 2023.

Important Medicare Enrollment Deadlines

Missing your enrollment window can result in delays in your healthcare coverage and permanent financial penalties. Here is exactly when you need to act.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): Your first chance to sign up. This is a 7-month window that begins 3 months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.

General Enrollment Period (GEP): January 1st – March 31st every year. If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period and do not qualify for a special exception, this is your chance to sign up for Medicare Part A and/or Part B. Coverage will begin the first day of the month after you enroll. (Late enrollment penalties may apply).

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): October 15th – December 7th every year. This is the primary window when anyone can join, drop, or switch a Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan for the upcoming year. Changes take effect on January 1st.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP): January 1st – March 31st every year. This window is only for people who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. During this time, you can switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan or drop your plan to return to Original Medicare. You can only make one change during this period.

Special Enrollment Period (SEP): If you experience certain qualifying life events—such as retiring and losing employer coverage, moving out of your current plan's service area, or moving into a skilled nursing facility—you may qualify for a special window to change your coverage outside of the standard enrollment periods without penalty.

Important Questions

What happens if I miss my Initial Enrollment Period when I turn 65?

If you miss your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period and you do not have other creditable coverage (like insurance from a current employer), you will likely face late enrollment penalties.

Part B Penalty: Your monthly premium goes up 10% for every full 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn't. This penalty lasts for as long as you have Part B.

Part D (Prescription) Penalty: If you go 63 days or more in a row without creditable drug coverage, you will pay a 1% penalty for every month you delayed. This penalty is permanently added to your monthly Part D premium.

Can I change my Medicare plan in the middle of the year?

Usually, you can only change your plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7). However, if you experience a qualifying life event (like moving to a new county in Florida or losing employer coverage), you may trigger a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that allows you to change your plan mid-year.

What is the difference between the Annual Enrollment Period and the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?

The Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) is for anyone eligible for Medicare to change their Advantage or Part D plans. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1 – March 31) is a specific window only for people who already have a Medicare Advantage plan, giving them one opportunity to switch to a different Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare.
